orchestra northOrchestra North Summer Program is returning to the scenic city of Owen Sound this July 16–21, 2018. Held at the historic Harmony Centre in downtown Owen Sound, the program features orchestras, chamber music, workshops, and private lessons for musicians of all ages and abilities from across Canada. The 2018 program boasts a spectacular roster of top-quality faculty and guest artists, featuring both local favorites as well as nationally recognized performers, and public performances throughout Owen Sound.

"One of the great things about Orchestra North is that it brings together musicians from across the region and beyond to share their passion for music and the arts" says cellist Sebastian Ostertag, Artistic Director of Orchestra North, and who was raised in Owen Sound. Orchestra North is thrilled to welcome violinist Yolanda Bruno, one of CBC's "Hot Canadian Musicians Under 30," as well as Georgian Bay Symphony Principal Clarinetist Robert Tite, and local violinists Samantha Orr and Reanne Kruisselbrink to the team of visiting artists and teachers leading programs and workshops. "I look forward to Orchestra North every year," says Chantal Lemire, viola and theory faculty member. "I have fallen in love with Owen Sound and can't imagine spending my summer anywhere else."

Online registration for Orchestra North is currently available for musicians and music lovers of all ages. "With our community partners, we are are dedicated to making music financially accessible for everyone through scholarships and bursaries" says Sebastian Ostertag. A half-day beginner strings program provides a fun introduction to playing in ensembles, as well as an opportunity to be part of the full Orchestra North Symphony. The full-day strings program offers outstanding private instruction, and unique experiences in small ensembles and orchestras. Performance opportunities include open-mics, chamber, and symphony orchestra concerts. "I loved how everyone tried to help everyone. This will probably be the highlight of my summer" says Tylin, a 2017 violin participant from Meaford. New to 2018, the Orchestra North woodwinds and brass program is perfect for intermediate and advanced musicians to experience the challenges and rewards or Orchestral and small ensemble playing.

This year marks the beginning of a brand-new Brass Academy, led by renowned Canadian trumpet player, Dr. Aaron Hodgson. The Academy offers university-level students mentorship and experiential learning as they create concerts and events, and assist with teaching during the festival week. "Our goal is to continue to build the musicianship, versatility, entrepreneurship, and leadership skills that are essential to their career paths as performers and music educators" says Dr. Hodgson, the Orchestra North Brass coordinator.
