symphonyThe Georgian Bay Symphony's 47th season begins October 20th with something rare, something new and a major classic. The concert, called "Horn Fanfare", will have three pieces on the program. The first is a short work for violin and orchestra, by young Canadian composer Alice Hong, called Phoenix. Short compositions by national composers will be featured throughout the season.

All four of the Symphony's French horn players will be showcased in the rarely performed "Concerto for four horns". This is only one of two works composed by H. Hübler the principal horn player for the Royal Court of Dresden in the late 1800s. Hübler was considered a master of the French horn and was well aware of its many possibilities. The orchestra is pleased to be able to present this delightful and fasts paces work that highlights the talent of its own members.

The final piece on the program is a major work by Russian composer Tchaikovsky. His Symphony No. 5 is a somber work that was written after the composer suffered from a period of writers block. Clocking in at between 45 and 50 minutes it is the kind of work you want to sit back and let it take you away. Tchaikovsky was never totally satisfy by this piece, but audiences and musicians have adored this dense work since it premiered in 1888. Keeping with the theme of a Horn Fanfare there is a beautiful French horn solo within Symphony No. 5.

The concert is on Saturday October 20 at 7:30 in the OSCVI Community Auditorium at East Ridge Community School, 1550 8th Street East Owen Sound. Seats can be reserved by contacting the Georgian Bay Symphony office at 519-372-0212 or at the door. For more information visit the Symphony's website or Facebook page.
