“The building of paper violins is an integral component of Sistema-inspired programs” says David McLeish, Board president. “Through the building process, the children become intimately familiar with the instrument, its pieces and their function, and they are encouraged to experiment with their creativity by painting and decorating the instrument as they like.”

The Big Sound is an after school music program intended to support vulnerable children by improving their self-esteem, academic performance, and sense of inclusion. The program is offered at no cost to children or their family.

The Big Sound teaches participants to sing and play an orchestral instrument in an ensemble that meets several days per week throughout the school year. Classes are led by qualified instructors, mentors and coaches who create a safe and caring environment for children. Nutritious snacks are provided each day.

The Big Sound operates on the evidence-based premise that musical instruction improves a child’s self-confidence, concentration and motivation. Ultimately, this can translate in to greater academic achievement and overall a healthier, happier life.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in support of The Big Sound can do so through their website.
