The Georgian Bay Folk Society and Summerfolk office has moved to the heart of downtown Owen Sound. The organization has been nestled above the Boot and Blade since it moved out of the Old Courthouse in 2010 but as of April 1st it will have a new home at 776 - 2nd Avenue East.

The Georgian Bay Folk Society is best known for presenting the Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival which has been showcasing folk arts in Owen Sound since 1976. In recent years the Folk Society has also organized quilting programs, mentored young musicians, offered music business workshops, and launched a weekly radio show to promote local and folk music.

The doors open at the new location on April 1st but the Folk Society is planning an official welcome event for later in the spring. The new store front office will provide a gathering space to better connect Summerfolk volunteers and patrons to the art that they love.

Community and collaboration are cornerstones of the Folk Society’s work. The increasing number of music venues, art galleries, and local restaurants in Owen Sound’s downtown core over the last several years made main street a natural home base to support the Folk Society’s mandate. With the city investing in revitalization and starting work on the river precinct project, the Folk Society expects that trend to continue.

“We want to be part of the great things happening downtown”, said Georgian Bay Folk Society President Steve Kenny. “The spirit of the folk community is all about connecting people and we’re excited to create a space for folks to gather in a neighbourhood that is already bringing them together”.

Kenny added that the move has not delayed the planning for the 44th Summerfolk Music and Crafts Festival which is scheduled for August 16,17, and 18th. Several performers have already been announced for the festival including Garnet Rogers, Carmanah, and William Prince. Anyone interested in volunteering or getting tickets for the festival can visit the new office location in April or find more information on the Summerfolk website at www.summerfolk.org
