On Friday, April 12 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, the Tom Thomson Art Gallery opens our doors to celebrate three new and exciting spring exhibitions: Barbara Sprague: The Dress, Lisa Birke: Volte-Face, and our latest Gallery Collection exhibition, Under Pressure: The Art of the Print, guest curated by David G. Taylor. The reception begins at 7pm with opening remarks starting at 7:15pm. Refreshments and appetizers to follow. This is a free event and all are welcome to join in the fun! The opening reception for the spring exhibitions is generously sponsored by Sisters on Huron, specialized women’s fashion boutique in Southampton, Ontario.

Get lost in the infinite threads of graphite in these mesmerizing, masterful and imaginative drawings from local artist Barbara Sprague. The Dress explores the intersection of family, memory and mythology, connecting the women in Sprague’s matriarchal lineage.

Barbara Sprague is a featured local artist from Southampton, Ontario.

Lisa Birke: Volte-Face

Hilarious and catastrophic, enlightening yet familiar, sometimes awkward yet relatable, Birke’s video work will keep you entertained. Investigating notions of self and societal clichés, Volte-Face highlights four video and performance works produced over several years.

Lisa Birke is an award-winning Canadian experimental short film maker. She is currently living and working in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Collection Exhibition Under Pressure: The Art of the Print
on view until May 11, 2019

Guest curated by David G. Taylor, this exhibition shows how prints are made, and how to recognize the various techniques. It illustrates the differences between the types of original prints, (not to be confused with reproductions that are also commonly referred to as prints). The prints in this exhibition are a small selection chosen from the Tom Thomson Art Gallery's collection of over seven hundred prints by Canadian artists.

David G. Taylor is a Gallery volunteer. He is a former Director/Curator of several galleries in Ontario.
