On Monday night, an important anti-racism motion was raised at Owen Sound City Council. Watching alone in the "media room" at city hall, on delay via Rogers television, I could not see all the faces but I could feel the emotion in the council chamber.
I have transcribed what was said, verbatim, by the three councillors who spoke to the motion,
Owen Sound City Council passed the anti-racism motion below 8-1 in a recorded vote. Councillor Merton introduced the motion with the following words:
I bring this motion to the table to acknowledge that we live in a world where racism and oppression . . .
The motion below, moved by Councillor Carol Merton, was unanimously approved at Owen Sound City Council on July 27.
Preamble: For many years Grey County and Owen Sound have been recognized for their important part in the history of the Underground Railroad and Black immigration into Canada.

Not one but two masked security guards greeted me at City Hall tonight - opened the door, asked me who I was. Then we signed a screening sheet with a disinfected pen. I guess this was for tracing after the fact, because I left it upside down on the table with the rest.
