hogweedThe City of Owen Sound is reminding residents to be cautious of the Hogweed plant and to avoid contact with the invasive species.

City staff are aware of a variety of locations on City property including trails. Staff are taking action to destroy these plants and prevent its further spread. Areas treated will be signed in accordance with the Pesticides Act.

Hogweed is a large plant that spreads rapidly in fields, woodlands, and along streams. Contact with the plant, particularly its watery sap, can result in painful blisters and other possible health side effects. Residents are strongly urged to avoid touching these plants.

While staff are working to eliminate these plants from City land, should you find a plant on City lands that is not signed, call 519-376-0265. Additional information can be found at: www.web2.mnr.gov.on.ca/mnr/Biodiversity/Invasive_Species/Giant_Hogweed_Fact_Sheet.pdf
