Jervis Bay Park

Following the completion of restoration work at Jervis Bay Park, the City of Owen Sound will be holding a public ceremony to rededicate the park on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Note the change of date.

In February of 1941, the City together with the Royal Canadian Legion and the Historical Society dedicated the park in honour of WWII veteran Jimmie Johnson, Owen Sound's first casualty of the war. The Park is located on the west bank of the Sydenham River and includes a bronze plaque and two stone pillars in honor of Johnson. The stone pillars have recently been reconstructed.

In addition to the rededication, students and faculty of O.S.D.S.S. will be on hand to unveil their annual Memory Markers display. The Memory Markers project, lead by O.S.D.S.S. faculty Ryan McManaman and Dave Alexander provides the opportunity for students to research and profile local War Veterans, culminating in an unveiling of Memory Markers at Jervis Bay Park. Each profile includes an interactive QR code allowing people to learn more about that particular veteran.

Reverend David Shearman will be providing words of welcome for the ceremony. City of Owen Sound Mayor Ian Boddy, MPP Bill Walker, Captain Rob Lay and O.S.D.S.S. students will be providing additional remarks throughout the ceremony.

The ceremony will be captured by Rogers TV and televised as part of their Remembrance Day coverage.
