A question regarding fluoride in the City's drinking water will not appear on the ballot in the 2018 Municipal Election in Owen Sound.

A petition was submitted to the City Clerk prior to the deadline of May 1, 2018. The petition requested that the ballot for the 2018 Municipal Election include a question about the removal of fluoride from the water. In accordance with the Fluoridation Act, the petition must be signed by at least 10% of the electors in the municipality and be certified as sufficient by the Clerk.

The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation ("MPAC") provided the Clerk with the current elector information for Owen Sound in order to certify each name. The current number of electors in Owen Sound is 15,884, requiring that 1,589 eligible electors sign the petition.

The City Clerk cannot certify the petition as it did not meet the 10% requirement. The petition had the required number of names but many were disqualified as duplicates, non-residents, incomplete or illegible submissions, individuals with unconfirmed citizenship or unconfirmed birth dates and names not found. The City Clerk is unable to accept further submissions because the May 1, 2018 deadline has passed.
