councilmembers

In the first quarter of every year, the City must release a statement of the remuneration and expenses of Council members.   The purpose is simply public transparency.

The table below includes everyone who served in 2018, including Jim McManaman and Arlene Wright who did not run in October's election, Peter Lemon who was not re-elected, and the three new councillors in the month of December.  Expenses include travel and fees for conferences and workshops, for example, for the year.

Up until this year, with Council's approval, up to one third of members' remuneration could be tax-exempt as expenses for their municipal duties.  The federal government removed that exemption in 2018, and earlier this year all returning Council members voted to replace that loss with a 10-percent increase in their remuneration from the City.  The three new councillors voted against the increase.

The remuneration of Council for 2019 was recommended by an independent committee, and has been budgeted at $288,350.
