credit-cards13

I recently discovered something that I think is worth sharing. Like many people, I purchase many items using my credit card. While I didn't ask for it, the card gives me "reward" points for every purchase. Occasionally I look at the number of points I have and wonder what I can get with them. When I go to the trouble of seeing what's available, I'm usually disappointed with the selection. Do I really need an overpriced coffee maker to clog my kitchen counter? Not really. Of course, there could be a flight somewhere. Sounds great until you find out that they pick the flight and it's not the always best timing for you.

I discovered that, at least for my Visa card, I could use these points to give to charitable organizations. I don't mean a charity that you never heard of, but an organization right here in Grey/Bruce. It turns out you can swap your points for a charitable receipt by donating to canadahelps.org. This is a trusted site that has been around for 15 years and connects you with over 16,000 charities. Once you trade in your reward points for Canadahelps gift dollars, you can go to the canadahelps.org website and search for "Grey Bruce Owen Sound" to find over 30 local organizations you can help.

For example, I picked United Way of Bruce Grey, selected "Assisting with utilities" and asked that it apply to the winter heating fund. I later learned that the money got to them the very next day.

All and all it's a great way to use up credit card gift points, help our own community and get a charitable tax receipt to boot.
