Dear Editor,
(1) According to the Food and Drug Administration fluoride is not a nutrient; it is a drug. A drug that's not even prescribed! (2) Fluoride has also been classified as a neurotoxin and I seriously have to question the use of this, not just for myself, but for our children!
Our unborn and infants are very vulnerable to fluoride toxicity. (3) A baby's blood-brain barrier is not even fully developed at birth. Therefore, giving fluoride, a neurotoxin, to a baby's growing brain before and after birth, can cause significant neurological damage, lowering their IQ. (4) Dr. Tim Kropp, EWG (Environmental Working Group) and author of Body Burden-The Pollution in Newborns, said, "...the umbilical cord carries not only the building blocks of life, but also a steady stream of industrial chemicals, pollutants and pesticides that cross the placenta..."
(5) Considering their diets are mainly liquid, our babies and infants receive up to 400 times more fluoride per pound of body weight than adults consuming the same level of it in the water. Not only do they receive proportionally more fluoride, but their smaller kidneys cannot release as much of the fluoride as adults are able to. Their kidneys can only excrete 15-20% and adults perhaps 50%.
(6) Studies show there is virtually no fluoride in Mother's milk. European researchers have measured the amount of fluoride and discovered that there is only 4 parts per billion. That's 250 times less than what is found in the water fluoridation systems. (7) When babies and infants are fed formula made with fluoridated water they have also been shown to have a higher risk of dental fluorosis.
What can you do to protect your baby? (8) Breast feed. (9) When breast feeding is not an option, use a non-soy formula. Dilute formula concentrations with fluoride free, or low fluoride bottled water, or water from a reverse osmosis water filtration system which removes most of the fluoride.
These precautions will help reduce the risk of brain damage, dental fluorosis and a multitude of accumulated soft tissue complications. For more on how to protect your baby, refer to: www.fluoridealert.org/issues/infant-exposure/protect/
