I am perplexed why Oshawa closure is getting so much media attention. I don't recall nearly as much coverage when Tenneco recently announced a similar closure in Owen Sound. Yet, on a per capita basis, the Owen Sound closure is 1.5 times as great as the GM closure if one considers only Oshawa, and an almost 5x greater per capita impact, if one considers that the greater Oshawa area includes Ajax, Whitby, & Pickering, the Owen Sound closure.

I hope that both the federal and provincial governments will extend the same support to Owen Sound workers (and those in other communities under similar circumstances) as they are offering to Oshawa i.e.:

Trudeau: help workers "get back on their feet" (Source: CBC)

Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains: "assist those workers any way it can" (Source: CBC)

Doug Ford: "authorizing Employment Ontario to deploy its Rapid Re-Employment and Training Services program to provide impacted local workers with targeted local training and jobs services to help them regain employment as quickly as possible." (Source: Premier's Office)
