cattle in penHaving a charity enforce animal cruelty laws in Ontario was doomed to failure from the get go. And the OSPCA only received $5 million a year from the Ontario government for their efforts. This arrangement was always a clear indication that Ontario was never serious about animal cruelty. It was a complaint driven system - and even then it worked poorly. And given the recent Federal changes to the transport regulations of farmed animals, Canada’s rules around sending animals to slaughter remain the worst in the western world. Canadian’s like to think of themselves as compassionate, caring people, but the way we treat animals suggests otherwise. And we are where we are because of successive Conservative and Liberal governments placating and forever subsidizing animal ag. There is a lot wrong with how we procure food from animals on farm, in transport and at slaughter in this country.
