Big things happen in small towns. Like everywhere else, life had come to a standstill in this sleepy hamlet during Covid. At least that is what it seemed like on the surface. There were actually very exciting things happening in this quaint little corner of Grey Highlands.

For one, the Rocklyn Inn was preparing to reopen once the pandemic stay-at-home restrictions were lifted. This popular B&B experienced the same staggering setbacks as their partners throughout the tourism and accommodation industries. Resilient, they could still open their Ice Cream and Snack Shop for curbside pickup. A popular location for hikers, cyclists and family trekkers, they offer a variety of delicious treats and are particularly well known for their popular ice cream cones. Minutes from local ski clubs, Bruce Trail hiking, and other outdoor adventures, the Rocklyn Inn is partnering with Bruce Street Technologies Limited to offer a feel good, give back promotion to thank their customers for their continued support throughout the pandemic.

Accordingly, Bruce Street will cover the cost of the first 100 ice cream cones purchased at the Rocklyn Inn on Saturday, June 12th! Additionally, the Rocklyn Inn will cover the cost of the next 50 cones as well!

Why Bruce Street? Well, during the pandemic this small local Internet Service Provider was busy bringing high speed internet via fibre optic cable to the Rocklyn residents! Covid has made internet, particularly rural internet, even more important with many people having to work or learn from home. Rural internet is a hot button topic these days which has become greatly politicized as there are major companies seeking substantial amounts of public funding to subsidize installing this service. Bruce Street maintains that private companies, given the opportunity, are able to fill this need at a fraction of the cost, and provide superior ongoing customer service as they live in the areas they service. All of Bruce Street’s fibre projects have been completed without any public grants or financial support.

Bruce Street has various local residential rural projects completed, in progress and planned, and is pleased to announce that Rocklyn is the first community project completed. The net result is Rocklyn residents are now able to enjoy download speeds up to 100Mbps! That is 5 to 10 times faster than normal rural speeds, and twice the goal of 50Mbps that CRTC maintains should be the minimum for all Canadian residents. Bruce Street already has several other small hamlets targeted for installation with the goal of joining these small density areas to create a fibre network that will be able to service the truly rural residents in between.
