Team Ruck is hot on the trail, literally and for a great cause.

ruck walk FOR VETAERSNStarting at the Tobermory Legion on July 5, the team’s walkathon is now underway and will span the entire 900 km. long Bruce Trail. The Ruck walk will conclude on August 7 at Niagara on-the lake. Proceeds and donations raised by the walk will help veterans facing or experiencing homeless and struggling first responders such as paramedics, firefighters and law enforcement.

In its short history, Ruck events have raised $423,000 to help achieve its goals. The first event, held in July 2014 in the Parry Sound area, was designed to create awareness and support for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder victims. Titled Road to Recovery, proceeds raised helped fund a PTSD retreat near Parry Sound.

Over the course of the 2022 Bruce Tail walk, Ruck participants will visit 20 Legions where they will bunk in for the evening, enjoy a Legion meal and share fellowship with Legion members and community citizens. After a 20 km. walk along the Bruce Trail in the Owen Sound area, Team Ruck will be at Branch 6 late in the afternoon of July 14. Legion members, non-members and community leaders are encouraged and welcome to attend the July 14th gathering to show their appreciation and hopefully donate. As well as a Legion BBQ, there will be live entertainment, 4:00 p.m., by the Ridge River Ramblers.

Each year, Team Ruck takes on a signature event. To date, these events have helped 752 different veterans transition off the streets into permanent sustainable housing. Operation: Leave the Streets Behind is a charity maintained by the Royal Canadian Legion with all Ruck participants donating their time and energy for a great cause. Ruck donations can be made at the Owen Sound Legion or via GoFundMe which to date, has seen pledges now at $75,464.

All donations qualify for Tax Deductible Receipts. For more information, contact the Owen Sound Legion (519-376-7784) or [email protected]
