cwhc-featureThe Community Waterfront Heritage Centre (CWHC) in Owen Sound is pleased to present a three-lecture series in conjunction with their current exhibition The Art of the Sailor.

Join the Community Waterfront Heritage Centre and Dr. Susan J. Douglas, Assistant Professor of History, from the University of Guelph, for "Stories in Ink", the first lecture in the series, at 2pm, on Saturday September 17, 2016. Dr. Douglas will share her knowledge of the history of skin art imagery and is joined by a panel of tattoo artists who will discuss and demonstrate their artistry.

Then on Saturday September 24, 2016, at 2pm, join Andre LaCroix - one of only three master scrimshanders in Canada- for "What's in Your Ditty Bag?". Andre will present the history of the art of scrimshaw, with demonstrations of this rarely seen marine folk art. Andre will be accompanied by expert knot-tyers of the Navy League demonstrating ancient marine knot tying techniques. (Knot tying kit included with admission).

The final lecture takes place at 2pm on Saturday October 1, 2016. "Mariner's Yarn" combines heritage and handicraft, with the storytelling and traditional sea chanties of musician Ian Bell, and his 'Songs of the Great Lakes'. Then be entertained by fibre artists Michael Sellick and Daniel Zondervan, who have created one of the largest online crafting communities, The Crochet Crowd, which has more than a million social media followers! Michael and Daniel will share their adventures of the high seas, as 'crochet cruise' hosts teaching crafters from around the globe.

This lecture series takes place at the Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library. Tickets are $10. On sale at Community Waterfront Heritage Centre and the library.
