pathThe Northern Bruce Truth and Reconciliation Group Announces Event #4 in their Six-Part Educational Series: Walk a New Path, featuring researcher Glenda Clarke speaking about the historic treaties from 1700 to 1900 that most affect the Bruce Peninsula, and lawyer John Bainbridge talking about the land claims process in Canada

The Northern Bruce Truth and Reconciliation Group was created in 2015 to learn how to contribute to building an environment where the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) Commission are acknowledged and the Calls to Action set out in the TRC Report are supported locally.

This summer, the Group is offering a six part educational series known as Walk a New Path. The series began with a successful June 13 launch event. On July 11, Shirley John, Saugeen First Nation Elder shared stories around a campfire about Nibi – Water is Life.

The fourth event occurs July 25, 2017, at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Tobermory, featuring a talk on treaties and land claims by researcher Glenda Clarke and lawyer John Bainbridge. Neither speaker will address the current Saugeen Ojibway Nation land claim that is presently in the courts.

The Assembly of First Nations states that the linkage between land – a particular territory – and a respective First Nation is the basis of defining peoples as indigenous. Coupled with this is the recognition that indigenous peoples have the right to own, use, develop, and control their own lands. The Supreme Court of Canada's recent decision in Tsilhqot'in Nation v. British Columbia (2014) further affirms the rights of First Nations with respect to land by establishing the first concrete legal recognition of Aboriginal title on the ground in Canada.

Doors open at 6:30 and admission, conversation and refreshments are free.

The fifth and sixth events in the educational series will occur August 8 and 22 back at the Parks Canada Visitor Centre in Tobermory, featuring films with details to be announced.
