remembranceEach year the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre offers a special program to recognize Remembrance Day, the historical moments in time, and the soldiers who have served and continue to serve our Country. ‘A Time to Remember: 100th Anniversary of Armistice’ will be held on Saturday, November 10.

This year November 11 marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of World War I and Armistice. Armistice is an agreement between countries who are at war, to end that fighting and 100 years ago this agreement was meant to bring a lasting peace. Join Mat Johnson, local history enthusiast, for a special lecture on this important historical event. Then, following a short intermission, enjoy a concert of wartime music by the Charlie Bell Trio. This event begins at 1:30 p.m., doors and a cash bar open at 1:00 p.m.

The Southampton Legion proudly presents ‘A Time to Remember’. Tickets are $8 (+HST) for members, $12 (+HST) for the public and veterans are free. You can purchase tickets at the Museum or by calling 519-797-2080.

Further commemorating Armistice, the Southampton Legion and partners have put together a weeklong schedule of events, some of which include ‘Music, Melodies and Marches’, ‘Remembrance Day Ceremony’ and end with the ‘Bells of Peace’ commemorative sunset ceremony. The ringing of the bells will be occurring at communities across Canada emulating the moment in 1918 when church bells across Europe tolled as the Great War ended. In Southampton, a parade of up to 125 soldiers and pipe band is combined with the Bells in churches, the fire hall and the town hall ringing 100 times to commemorate this centenary.

“We’re thrilled to work with the Museum and community partners in offering a series of special ceremonies and events to honour the sacrifices of our soldiers and communities,” said John Willetts, President Southampton Legion. “We hope to see many people come to these events to commemorate this special anniversary”.
