Owen Sound City Councillor Carol Merton and I were out on the last trash pick up of the season with the Owen Sound Waste Watchers.  We were finishing where we began last April  - down along the east harbour - when we came upon some visitors to the city enjoying the sun and the water.

Ernel had been to Owen Sound several times, and his cousin wanted to know why he hadn't brought her here sooner.

carolandernel"I love this place!" Ernel told us, smiling and waving his arm across the whole panorama of the bay.  When he realized we were cleaning up, he brought us a few items he'd found, and when we couldn't retrieve a piece of bedding that had been tossed over a fence, he was keen to find a way.  It had been a slow fishing day, but Ernel hooked that quilt with ease, and helped Carol land it.

"I like to help wherever I can, in whatever way I can," he said.

When Ernel said he had just had his first grandchild, Carol told him all the places they could enjoy together in the Owen Sound area next summer. He stopped her in mid-description of the blue water on the Peninsula - "I'm from the Caribbean," he said, "I love the water!"  But Ernel wants to see Owen Sound in winter too, and he says he will be back again soon.  "I'd like to move here," he said.

We trundled off with Carol's overflowing "trash trolley" to add to the 3000+ items collected.

"That just made my day," Carol was grinning.

Ernel understands that a good community is more than what it can give you, but how you can contribute.  I hope he does move here.
