dollarbill

- by Steve Briggs

I have a dollar bill hanging in my exam room, and every day, pretty much, I relate the story of the two boats having been made a few blocks down the road by Russel Brothers in Owen Sound...and that the boat by the harbour wall (the Ancaster) is one of them! There are many people that don't know this connection now. Even when the dollar bill was still in use I did not know this!

About 3.4 billion one-dollar bills were printed between June 3, 1974 and June 30, 1989, when the paper dollar was discontinued. The last Canadian Dollar bill featured the Ancaster (smaller) and the Missinaibi (larger) as captured in a black & white 1963 photograph by Malak Karsh entitled Paper & Politics.

The lumber tugs are re-assembling a broken log boom on the Ottawa river just below the Parliament Buildings. In 1991 the Ancaster returned to Owen Sound (largely because of Don Capel's efforts) one day short of 40 years after it was launched, and is now a permanent exhibit of the Owen Sound Marine & Rail Museum (Community Waterfront Heritage Centre).
