durhamdam-safe-fullWater samples taken at Durham Dam on July 3, 2014 showed bacterial levels below the provincial limit. Based on these results, the posting from June 30 has been lifted and the area is now deemed safe for bathing. The area was posted when water samples exceeded Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care standards for acceptable bacterial levels.

"Bacterial levels do fluctuate quite a lot, particularly with stormy weather." said Andrew Barton, Program Manager with the Grey Bruce Health Unit. "The best way to reduce your risk is to keep an eye on the conditions at the time of your visit. The Grey Bruce Health Unit recommends that you do not swim following heavy rain, if there are large numbers of waterfowl or other animals in the area or in cloudy water. A good rule of thumb is that you should be able to see your feet when you are waist deep."

Beach information is updated as conditions change. For more information, please call 519-376-9420 or 1-800-263-3456 or visit www.publichealthgreybruce.on.ca.
