As part of its 2018-19 Funding Engagement Guide, the Ministry of Education has included questions about possible changes to the provincial Pupil Accommodation Review Guidelines. The proposed changes include longer timelines for the consultation/review process, as well as requirements that school boards provide more "accommodation options" and consider the impact of school closings on the community.

In June, the Ministry imposed a moratorium on school closings and announced that school boards would receive an additional $20 million annually in a Rural and Northern Education Fund. No further funding appears to be planned, but the Ministry will be holding consultations on the proposed changes to the guidelines.
