hospiceTwo local honourees on behalf of the Grey Bruce Residential Hospice - Chapman House.

On Monday April 23rd, at the annual Hospice Palliative Care Ontario conference in Toronto, the Chapman family from Markdale, noted for their very successful ice cream business, accepted the Outstanding Philanthropist Award in recognition of their exceptional generosity and outstanding civic and philanthropic leadership demonstrated by their gift that was the catalyst for creation of Chapman House Hospice located in Owen Sound.

David Chapman said "we were delighted to receive this this award, and it's a nice tribute to the many staff and volunteers in our community that give so much to hospice on a daily basis". Chapman Ice Cream also encourages its employees to support Hospice by enabling regular charitable donations to be deducted through its payroll process. Their generosity continues an ongoing basis through the installation of an on-site ATM in their plant for the convenience of employees. All fees generated are donated to hospice, and in the most recent quarter this amounted to about $1,500!"

Another recognition is the June Callwood Award. This year's Chapman House June Callwood recipient is Cathy Jenkins.

The June Callwood Award was established in 1994 by the Hospice Association of Ontario, to acknowledge and thank outstanding hospice volunteers throughout Ontario. The award was named in honour of the late June Callwood, the Award Patron, and long-time advocate of hospice, community activist, author and recipient of the Order of Canada. Volunteers are special people – a view strongly held by Ms. Callwood and expressed by her on many occasions. In all her years as a journalist, author, broadcaster and humanitarian, June Callwood's name became synonymous with integrity, talent and passion for social justice. She has touched the lives of generations of Canadians by giving that passion expression through her words and through her work in the service of those in need.

Cathy Jenkins has been the Heart and Soul of Chapman House Food Services since we opened our doors in May 2017.

As a dietician with a wealth of knowledge and experience in the healthcare environment, Cathy understands that people have a deep connection with food and that eating is important to an individual's quality of life. Cathy is passionate that residents being cared for at Hospice should be able to enjoy their favourite foods, despite their medical challenges, in the final days of their lives.

Cathy's contributions to the development and growth of the Kitchen Management system, including the creation of Policies & Procedures; Health & Safety measures and Volunteer Training has been insurmountable. Cathy is truly a Hospice Champion!
