receptacle saugeen riverThe Brockton Fisheries Task Force (BFTF), has just implemented a program which involves the installation of recycling and trash stations, located in major traffic areas along the Saugeen River, including some of the Saugeen River access points. Fish line containers will also be installed with the stations to make them functional and multi-purpose.

"We're very excited about this program", stated Ken Chandler, Chair of the BFTF. "It's extremely important that we implement good stewardship activities along the river if we are to ensure its sustainability", he continued. "Hundreds of individuals now fish along the Saugeen River, rated as one of the best fishing locations in Southern Ontario. The stations provide a proper outlet for trash, recyclables and used fishing line, keeping it out of our river systems and away from sensitive aquatic life."

The Brockton Fisheries Task Force was initiated seven years ago, to provide awareness of the Saugeen River and its resources, while encouraging conservation practices. Their aim is to 'continue with ongoing conservation of the river ecosystem and its tributaries and strive to improve and promote the river for the benefit of all users'. Representatives on the committee include Ken Chandler (Chair), Steve Adams (Brockton Councillor), Barry Randall and Bruce Davidson (Grey Bruce Sustainability Network), Jo-Anne Harbinson and Shannon Wood (Saugeen Conservation) and Brian Folmer (Community Improvement Committee).

A total of four receptacles have been installed, including one along the river behind Tim Horton's and two in Lobies Park. One will also be installed along the river at the end of South Street as well as Maple Hill Dam and Saugeen River access point #6. The Committee has been working with the Municipality, Brockton's Community Improvement Committee, Tourism Grey Bruce Simcoe, local interest groups and businesses to ensure the construction of the stations as well as ongoing maintenance.

Special thanks to the Municipality of Brockton, Bruce Power, 519 Table and Pour, Wingfeather Outfitters, Chandler Fly Fishing Adventures, Bruce County (Spruce the Bruce), and Welbeck Sawmill.

The Task Force is currently looking to secure additional sponsors for other remaining stations. "Together, we can help protect our river system", stated David Inglis, Mayor of the Municipality of Brockton!

It is anticipated that this effort will expand in the future to include other major access points along the Saugeen River as well as neighbouring municipalities.

Those interested in getting involved can contact the Municipality of Brockton at 881-2223.

Other projects of the Brockton Fisheries Task Force have included river clean-up operations, work bees and information sessions.
