ngas-fullFor many, catching up on this past winter's utilities bills has been a year long struggle.

The United Way of Bruce Grey is facing an escalation of calls in regard to disconnections from natural gas and electricity providers.

Despite more funds being available to the program, demand has outstripped those resources.

The United Way has processed almost a quarter of a million dollars in utility assistance to date and all of the various funds are currently out of money and will not be replenished until 2015.

The United Way has the ability to help people negotiate with the utility companies around payment plans until additional funds come in.

"Since we have started doing this program, 9 years ago, we have provided over $1 million in support to the community" stated United Way Executive Director Francesca Dobbyn. "We need a broader community conversation about energy poverty; the number of seniors on fixed incomes dealing with major health issues and fewer supports is disturbing."

The United Way fundraises for propane, oil and wood as there is no funding for those types of utilities. At this time there is a wait list valued at a need of $13 000. Donations to that program can be made through the United Way and online at 519 376 1560 www.donatatetoday.ca
