paramedic weekMay 26 to June 1 is Paramedic Services Week in Canada. The theme this year is “Celebrating Successes” to showcase the vital role paramedics play in the health of Canadians.

“Grey County Paramedics provide compassionate medical care for anyone who dials 9‑1‑1. They also proactively work with our aging and vulnerable population by visiting patients in non-emergency settings,” explains Kevin McNab, Director of Paramedic Services. “Paramedics overcome many challenges on the job. This year we’re looking forward to being out in the community, celebrating with the people we serve.”

Grey County has a full schedule planned for Paramedic Services Week. On Tuesday, May 28, an ambulance and mobile base will be on display at Keady Market. Market goers can stop by and chat with a paramedic and learn about the equipment and the services provided to the community.

Three ‘Stuff the Ambulance’ food drives are planned for the week. On Wednesday, May 29th, paramedics will be at Foodland in Thornbury from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. On May 30 they will be at Grant’s Independent Grocer in Hanover from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The final food drive of the week will be held on May 31 at Zhers in Owen Sound from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

All donations support local food banks. Since 2010, Grey County Paramedics have collected nearly 30,000 kgs of food.

Thursday May 30 is the Paramedic Services Appreciation Luncheon featuring the Second Chance Reunion. This always emotional day reunites cardiac arrest survivors with the paramedics who helped save their lives. This year five ‘saves’ will be recognized along with multiple Director’s awards for exceptional service. This is a private event for paramedics, survivors, their families and other guests.

Finally, Grey County is extending Paramedic Services Week to include a special blood drive. Sirens for Life will run at the Owen Sound Legion, 1450 2nd Ave West, on June 5 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Paramedic Services Week events are made possible thanks to the dedicated Grey County paramedics volunteering.
