KevinWeaverThe options for degree-level studies in Simcoe County are growing, as Georgian College announces two new degrees beginning in fall 2020.

The first is an Honours Bachelor of Counselling Psychology. It’s the first undergraduate psychology degree of its kind in Canada, giving students the theoretical background while they also have the opportunity to learn and practice counselling techniques. Students can explore various career options such as counselling and case management in different settings from community support agencies to correctional institutions. The program will be offered at Georgian’s Orillia Campus.

The second is an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration in Health Management, offered at the Barrie Campus. Students study health management under a business lens, developing skills to create health policy and manage their organizations. Canadian health care, including traditional and current Indigenous health care, will be studied. Possible career options and settings include health and policy development for hospitals, long-term care facilities or public health agencies.

Both programs include the hands-on learning Georgian is known for. The health management degree includes two co-op work terms, while counselling has one internship and two field placements.

Kevin Weaver, Vice President Academic, said these new Georgian degrees are part of the college’s comprehensive degree strategy to serve Central Ontario while meeting labour market demands.

“Graduates of these degree programs will help fill a growing need in our workforce for specialized skills, particularly in health administration and human behaviour,” said Weaver. “By offering degree studies locally, we are reducing barriers for students in Central Ontario and beyond to pursue their programs of choice.”

In 2016, 28.5 per cent of Canadians had a bachelor’s degree or higher, while 18.3 per cent of those who lived in Simcoe County had degrees, according to Statistics Canada.

With these two new programs, Georgian now offers 13 degree choices: seven Georgian degrees, four Lakehead-Georgian degree-diplomas, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with York University, and a RPN-BScN degree completion pathway with Ontario Tech University.

There are several ways to learn about all Georgian programs. Search GeorgianCollege.ca, pick up a 2020-21 viewbook at any Georgian campus, or experience Georgian in person at Open House on Saturday, Nov. 16. RSVP at GeorgianCollege.ca/openhouse.
