caringCaremongering – this distinctive word has popped up in the wake of COVID-19 to describe the remarkable acts of kindness and caring that emerged in this difficult year. As Mr. Rogers once said, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping” – and find them we have! The Meaford community is a caring and supportive place year-over-year, and that has shone through the uncertain circumstances of 2020. By following the recommendations of the Grey Bruce Health Unit – washing our hands, wearing masks, and sticking to our social circles – we have all been ‘helpers’ this year, but the efforts of some go above and beyond to support the needs in our community.

Each year, we hold a thank-you dinner for the hundreds of volunteers who work hard to make the Municipality of Meaford a great place to live. From sports team organizers, service clubs and scarecrow builders, to community gardeners and dinner volunteers, and litter cleaners, this event brings together the many people who show they care about our community. Sadly, the dinner was cancelled this year due to COVID, but I want all of those who contribute their time and skills every year to know how much we appreciate their efforts to make Meaford a richer, more beautiful, and more welcoming community.

A silver lining to these troubling and unusual times is seeing the evidence of kindness and care spreading throughout our community. Groceries have been delivered to those in quarantine, meals were dropped off to housebound seniors, and welcome contributions made to the food bank and hospital. Painted rocks popped up in unlikely places to draw a smile, and quilters sewed masks for friends and neighbours. Firefighters drove by children’s homes as a birthday treat, and signs for frontline workers, and our 2020 graduates appeared in windows and on front lawns. In these ways and so many others, our residents have demonstrated their support for their neighbours.

Communities that take care of one another are resilient. We have lifted each other up during a worldwide pandemic, and I know we will continue with the phone calls to shut-ins, the friendly waves as we meet on the trails, the patience and understanding as we wait for our turn – all to help keep up a positive frame of mind. I am so proud to call this kindhearted and thoughtful community home. Thank you to each of you for continuing to follow the protocols to keep each other safe as recovery moves forward.

Stay well everyone.
