Sawed off

On Thursday, Aug. 24, at approximately 6:00 p.m. The Owen Sound Police Service received multiple calls from citizens regarding a male trying to forcibly enter an east side residence to confront the resident who was known to them.

After failing to gain entry, the male fled from the area in a vehicle. As he fled the area, the man struck two vehicles that were travelling on city roadways. The man failed to remain at either location and was heard and observed squealing his tires and driving in an aggressive and dangerous manner.

Owen Sound Police Officers responded to the call and initiated an immediate investigation.

Another citizen called police to advise that this man had parked in a west side apartment building lot and had further damaged a parked vehicle.

Officers located the man walking away from his vehicle in the 900 block 8th Avenue West and initiated an arrest.

The officers quickly determined that the man was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun that he had concealed down the front of his pants.

The man was not compliant with directions issued by the officers and he was subsequently subdued effectively with the deployment of a taser.

The sawed- off shotgun was removed from the male’s possession and an inspection of the gun revealed that it was loaded and ready to be fired.

The man was transported to the Owen Sound Police Service where he was subsequently charged with the following criminal offences:

  • dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
  • impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • failure to remain at the scene of an accident (2 counts)
  • possession of a loaded and restricted firearm
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle

  • possession of a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • mischief not exceeding five thousand dollars (2 counts)
  • causing a disturbance
  • owner operate vehicle on a highway with no insurance

Fortunately, no members of the public, the accused or the responding officers were injured as a result of this incident.
