VARNEY - Open Wheel Modifieds returned to the bull ring this past Friday night with their thundering excitement. Feature one saw short-track legend "The Ironman" #36 Gary Elliot from Waterdown bring the field to the green flag. From the drop of the green Elliots' car was hooking up as he tried to build some distance on the field as he knew #8 Gary McLean from Conn had to work his way through the field.

Attack rookies and a handful of veterans got their first taste of 2014-15 Ontario Hockey League action this weekend in two pre-season games that revealed there's still a lot of work to be done.

"I think we've got a good group here, I really do," said head coach Greg Ireland after Sunday's 5-2 home loss to the Barrie Colts. "I just think, more than anything, we have a lot more work to do. . . The great thing of it is, it's September, and we've got a long time to work on it all, so it doesn't discourage me, that's for sure."

Mark McPhatter of Owen Sound won in the trout category with a lake trout weighing 18.56 lbs. Jayson Dixon, also of Owen Sound, was the overall champion with a Salmon weighing 24.11 lbs. Dixon won a package of prizes, including a 17-foot boat and trailer, worth more than $30,000.
