Contest ExtendedViolence Prevention Grey Bruce has extended the deadline for submissions to the Art for Change Contest. The contest invites students in grades seven through twelve to create art about healthy and unhealthy relationships. The top three submissions in each category will receive cash prizes at an awards ceremony in Owen Sound.

The contest deadline was scheduled for January 17th but low submission numbers and exam time inspired the organizers to reschedule.

“Our original goal with this contest was to encourage teens in Grey Bruce to start conversations about healthy and unhealthy relationships”, said Jon Farmer – Violence Prevention Grey Bruce Coordinator. “We haven’t had the number of submissions we were hoping for and folks have let us know that with exams coming up, teens are busy. We decided to extend the deadline so that everyone who might be interested in this contest has a chance to participate”.

Students in grades seven and eight are eligible to submit visual or graphic art. Students in grades nine through twelve can submit visual or graphic art as well as 60 second videos. Farmer said that the videos can contain anything from music and poetry to animation as long as it connects to the theme.

Violence Prevention Grey Bruce also announced an additional category in the contest, inviting submissions from adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“The Reach Centre got in touch with us to ask whether their members could participate in the contest. We know that people with disabilities experience disproportionately rates of violence so expanding the contest was a natural response to their interest”, Farmer added.

The new contest deadline is April 3rd with the awards ceremony tentatively scheduled for April 30th.  May is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and, according to Farmer, a natural time to promote these kinds of conversations. The Art for Change contest is supported by the Community Foundation Grey Bruce and full contest details are available at violencepreventiongreybruce.com.
