smokedetector-featureThe Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services will begin their annual Home Visitation and Assistance Program on May 5, 2015.

This voluntary program is performed by the on-duty firefighters and allows homeowners the opportunity to have their home inspected for life safety devices as well as providing homeowners the opportunity to ask questions of the firefighters.

"The home visitation and assistance program has been very successful," said Fire Chief Tom Potter. "The firefighters will ensure working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are present in the home where required and answer any questions the homeowner may have in regards to home fire and life safety."

The area of the City of Owen Sound involved in the 2015 campaign is the North East portion of the city. Firefighters will be visiting homes in the area north of 10th Street East and east of 2nd Avenue East. The program is voluntary for homeowners.

If a resident does not live in the area being canvassed but would like an inspection by our firefighters to discuss their home fire safety and life safety, please contact the fire department at 519-376-2512 to schedule an inspection.

The Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services are also prepared to answer any questions residents may have regarding the proper placement of Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarms.

tap-featThe City of Owen Sound is asking residents and businesses to run water ONLY if they are connected to a neighbour via a temporary hose, or temporary watermain until Monday, April 27, 2015.

The forecast over the next few days and over the weekend shows negative temperatures overnight, which could potentially freeze hoses unless your water is running steadily through them.

Please begin running water from one tap only, about the size of a pencil, ½ inch diameter (about 1 cup (250 ml) of water in 10 seconds).

Again, this only applies to residents and businesses who are on a temporary hose or watermain.

goodsexchange-featureThe first of three Goods Exchange Days for 2015 will be taking place on Saturday April 25. It's like a City-wide Free Yard Sale.
Goods Exchange Day is an enjoyable way to divert usable items and materials from landfill disposal. It is also a great way to get rid of unwanted stuff without the hassle of having to put on your own garage sale.
We ask that City residents place unwanted but still usable items at the curb in front of their homes after 8:00 a.m. on Saturday April 25. Everyone is encouraged to take a look around and pick up items that they can re-use. Popular Goods Exchange Day items include sporting goods, furniture, small appliances, books, art, tools, toys, doors, sinks, windows etc. Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 6:00 p.m. as there will be no special municipal collection.
In order to ensure that items at the curb are indeed intended as Goods Exchange Day items, we ask that residents tie a white plastic bag to one of the items at the curb.
As always, we ask that residents please drive carefully, watch for pedestrians and obey traffic laws in their quest for curbside bargains.

Before councillors took their seats before the cameras they had already been meeting in camera for more than three hours, primarily discussing local property issues. The regular council meeting involved some real rearranging of the agenda, so I have been a little more thematic in my notes for clarity.

The meeting began with a pleasant duty for Mayor Ian Boddy - recognizing the Owen Sound Volunteers of the Year.

Among them, this year's honourees have over 120 years (to which they will admit) of combined service to their communities. Eugenia Rawn was primarily nominated for her work with the Quota Club, and Ann Kelly for the Festival of Northern Lights, but between the two there was hardly a community cause or committee to which they had not made a contribution. Barbara Olmsted, manager of the Auxiliary-run gift shop at Grey Bruce Health Services, spends as much time on her duties there as any full-time employee. Of course, being the gracious women they are, all three Volunteers of the Year thanked and credited others for their success.
