It took a while for the public to realize the serious risk one imposed on themselves by smoking cigarettes.  Similarly it is taking a while for people to realize the seriousness of climate change and that some action has to be taken.  One cannot deny that imposing a tax on cigarettes cut its consumption.  A carbon tax will do the same thing.  It was one thing for cigarette companies to poo-poo the health concerns related to smoking but it completely boggles my mind why a political party would poo-poo a carbon tax.
