Owen Sound District Secondary School's 2018 E.C.H.O. class- Education for Culture, Habitat and the Outdoors - will be hosting a local food event Saturday, June 23 at the pavillion in Harrison Park and everyone is welcome.
The class has named the project "Echo Foods" and they will be speaking with people about some of the great meals you can make with foods grown locally, and why doing so not only benefits individuals, but also helps keep the world clean.
Paige Garrett - Tunstall, one of the students taking part in the E.C.H.O. program, says "I find it very disheartening to know that 25% of kids under 17 fall under the poverty line. I believe that by teaching the community of Grey Bruce how to access healthy, affordable food we can help reduce this number. This event will help inform people about how all aspects of life have an impact on each other. We will focus on the problems and solutions concerning invasive species, the benefits of eating seasonal, local produce, and how to provide food security for everyone in the community."
The class will be hosting an event at Harrison Park on June 23rd from 11:00am to 3:00pm in order to help improve the community's understanding of food security. There will be sample foods served by the students, which will be available by donation, to show that it is possible, if not easy, to make healthy, delicious meals all using food grown locally.
This event is happening thanks in large part to the Gosling Foundation. Their support of outdoor education has also enabled the class to go on trips such as the 8 day canoe trip through Algonquin park, and a 3 day hike through Bruce Peninsula National park.
