Alzheimer logoOwen Sound - There is a lot happening at the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce. So much that they need to “Taco-Bout It” with you. On Wednesday July 24th, anyone impacted by Alzheimer’s disease or other related dementias is invited to the Grey Bruce Health Unit from 10am – 12pm for free tacos and the opportunity to try out some of the new programing and service initiatives that have been launched in the past year.

“With help from some amazing foundations and grants the organization has been able to add some new options for people living with dementia,” said Executive Director Stephen Musehl. “Right now there are about 1,000 local families who are taking advantage of our programs but that’s only a fraction of local people living with dementia. Hopefully we can bring some extra attention to this and make sure that everyone who would like support is receiving it.”

For years, the Society focused on helping caregivers by providing information, counselling, support groups and education seminars. The Society designed these new programs for people living with dementia. “Creating this new category of services has been a huge focus for the organization,” Musehl stated. “No matter what stage of the disease you might be in, it is still vital to be a part of your community, to avoid social isolation and to have the opportunity to be part of something.”

The Ontario Trillium Foundation is funding three more years of the successful Minds in Motion program and helping to launch the Society’s new Active Living Program. Minds in Motion combines physical and mental stimulation in a group setting. Research determined that the combination of 1 hour of exercise followed by 1 hour of social and mental engagement done in a group setting affects the brain in positive ways.

The new Active Living Program will use social recreation strategies to boost the physical and mental well-being of Alzheimer Society clients. In its early stages, this new program will try a variety of activities (e.g. gardening, photography, St. John's Dogs) and formats to determine what works best for local people living with dementia.

With a grant from the New Horizons for Seniors program the Society purchased a BikeAround system for use in the community. BikeAround is a specialized exercise bike that pairs with Google Maps to create an engaging experience for people living with dementia. By pedaling and steering the bike, individuals can visit or revisit anywhere in the world. Many people choose to explore the neighbourhood where they grew up or a favorite old vacation spot.

Finally, the Community Foundation of Grey-Bruce provided the society with funds to purchase Joy for All companion pets. The robotic cats and dogs respond to touch through movement and sound. Many people living with dementia find this comforting.

“Even in just a few weeks we have seen tremendous results from the companion pets and Active Living,” said Musehl. “I hope the community comes by to see these initiatives, say hello, enjoy some food, plus much more on the 24th.” If you or someone you know, could benefit from support please contact the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce at (519) 376-7230 or [email protected]. They are happy to “taco-bout” all your options.
