swimmerThe YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce has launched a new employment program in their Health, Fitness & Aquatics facility to fast-track future lifeguards into employment with the Y. The Y Aquatic Employment Program allows participants of their Aquatic Certifications courses to apply to become a lifeguard before they complete the course series. Selected participants complete an interview and swim test, along with all required Aquatic Certification courses to land a position on the Y Aquatics team in only five weeks!

Aquatic jobs are ideal for students with shifts available early mornings, evenings, and weekends and adults with full-time positions available. While swim lessons are a fantastic way to learn how to swim and be in and around water safely, they aren’t a requirement to start the Aquatic Employment Program. Along with being a confident swimmer and at least 16 years of age, to be a lifeguard or swim instructor at the YMCA, candidates need to successfully pass Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid, Standard First Aid, Bronze Cross, and National Lifeguard courses. Individuals over the age of 18 are also required to provide a current and satisfactory Police Records and Vulnerable Sector check as a condition of employment. Register for all courses starting August 5th and you could be a working lifeguard or swim instructor by the end of August!

Being a lifeguard and swim instructor can allow you to work flexible hours, swim while you work, socialize with participants and coworkers, and feel a sense of pride and purpose while you keep people safe.

Successful participants will build leadership skills that can have a profound impact on your future success. You’ll also make a splash in your community by joining a non-profit charity that works to build vibrant, healthy neighbourhoods.
