The Owen Sound & North Grey Union Public Library is pleased to share upcoming programs that celebrate hockey writing in Canada.
Next week when many people will be visiting Owen Sound in person or virtually as part of the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada activities, the library will be offering programming that highlights the unique contributions of hockey writers with connections to Grey Bruce.
The featured writers are Jonathon Jackson, Terry Koshan, Paul White, Eric Zweig, Tracey Richardson and Rob Ritchie.
They represent many types of hockey writing including historical, current, nonfiction and fiction. The sessions are free to members of the public with the first one happening at the library and the subsequent ones accessible to everyone through Zoom.
Tuesday, Jan. 17., at 7:00 p.m., join author Jonathon Jackson in the library auditorium as he discusses hockey research and writing. Jonathon’s latest project is an updated printing of his non-fiction book, The Making of Slap Shot: Behind the Scenes of the Greatest Hockey Movie Ever Made.
Wednesday, Jan. 18., at 3:00 p.m. join sports journalist Terry Koshan via Zoom. Wiarton native Terry Koshan has been writing about hockey for twenty-seven years. His columns can be found in the Toronto Sun and many other newspapers across North America. Terry will chat about sports journalism today, hockey, writing and more.
Friday, Jan. 20, at 3:00 p.m. authors Paul White and Eric Zweig will share their insights about hockey, research, and writing non-fiction via Zoom. Eric Zweig has been writing professionally since 1985 and has published more than 40 books. Eric’s most recent book, Hockey Hall of Fame True Stories has been a top-ten bestseller during 2022. Paul White has been writing about history and hockey for more than two decades. His most recent book, Journey Through Owen Sound’s Hockey History takes the reader on a journey beginning in 1888 through to 2021 and details Owen Sound’s rich hockey heritage.
Saturday, Jan. 21., at 3:00 p.m. authors Tracey Richardson and Rob Ritchie will share their experiences incorporating hockey into their novels, also via Zoom. Tracey Richardson is the author of 14 novels published by Bella Books, two of which were Lambda Literary Awards finalists. Her books have been Golden Crown Literary Society finalists. Rob Ritchie is a storyteller with four novels and many songs to share. His first novel, Orphans of Winter, was short-listed for the 2007 Re-Lit Awards and the film option was reserved by Jason Priestley and The Agency. We’ll discuss Tracey's novel, Delay of Game and Rob's novel Orphans of Winter and chat about hockey, research and fiction writing.
The library is thankful to the writers for their willingness to be part of our Hockey Writing in Canada: Grey Bruce Connections winter program.
