The Saugeen Ojibway Nation Water Walk/Bimooseyaang Gagwejimigo Nmama Aki is a cultural expression to give prayer to the land and water that could be impacted by the proposed partnership opportunity with TC Energy to construct a Pumped Hydro Project and the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO)’s proposal of the Deep Geological Repository (DGR).

This is to bring awareness to the possible habitats that could be threatened such as species at risk and Endangered species, along with multiple fish habitats.

waterwalk2017This water walk is to engage both Saugeen and Nawash of the SON (Saugeen Ojibway Nation) membership on our cultural practices, along with prayerful contemplation of the development issues in SON Territory and to aid in the decision making process.

The Water Walk around SON Territory will take about 14-18 days to complete. This is based on the Water Walk that was completed in 2017.

The Water Walk in 2017 took place along the perimeter of the Saugeen Ojibway Territory starting and finishing at Noojimoowaaning.

Our endeavour was to stay as close to the water as possible by taking roads and highways that would allow us to see the water on our Northern and Western perimeters.

This Water Walk will be conducted as a relay, we will have three sets of Walkers per rotation and should be ensured that there was male and female walkers per group, walkers will be positioned six hydro poles apart along the route in preparation for the carrying of the Eagle Staff, Water Vessel and Asini Kwe.

If you are a member of Saugeen of Nawash, you are more than welcome to join us!
