hiking-captionOn April 16, 2016 at 6:54 p.m., the Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call regarding two lost persons hiking in the Bruce Peninsula National Park, in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. An OPP Sergeant and a Bruce Peninsula National Park Warden contacted the missing hikers via cell telephone and were able to ascertain the approximate location. The two persons were found near Loon Lake; cold, and unprepared for the extended hike. After approximately 5 hours from the initial call to Police for help, they were returned safely to their vehicle.

With the weekend approaching, the Bruce Peninsula OPP would like to remind residents and visitors of the following safety checks before embarking on the trails.

Before you head out on a hike, plan your route. Carry maps, gps and prepare for the terrain and weather conditions. Always let someone know where you are heading, and what time you plan on returning. If you have parked a vehicle nearby, leave a note on the dash with the above information. Do not leave any valuables in your car.Ensure you are dressed appropriately for the weather. It may be warm when you start out on the trails but the temperature and weather conditions can change quickly. Wear layers and proper footwear. The Bruce Trail is not meant to be hiked in flip flops! Never go out on the trails without water and food. Bring all necessary supplies and/or your medication in case any issues arise. Some items to pack are; sunscreen, band aids, inhalers, epi pens (first aid kit), flashlight and a lighter.Carry a fully charged cell phone and list of emergency contacts in case you find yourself lost and needing help. It is not always guaranteed you will have cell phone service on the Bruce Peninsula; so being prepared to hunker down for the night, may be a safe option until day light emerges and/or emergency personnel can reach you.

Be prepared, have fun and enjoy the beautiful Bruce Peninsula.
