ORILLIA – The Ontario Provincial Police wrapped up its four-day Canada Day weekend traffic safety campaign on July 2, 2014 with two reported deaths on OPP-patrolled roads.

As part of their traffic safety campaign, the OPP raised awareness about speeding and other forms of aggressive driving, calling on motorists and passengers to do their part to help keep the number of speed-related deaths from rising. Speed is currently the leading contributing factor in road deaths investigated by the OPP so far this year (2014) when compared to distracted and impaired driving.

The OPP dealt with high volumes of traffic throughout the weekend and was pleased to see the majority of motorists driving safely as they made their way to and from their travel destinations.

Officers from The Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP dealt with 221 calls for service from Friday to Tuesday. Of those, seven were for vehicle collisions. Police also charged one motorist with impaired related offences and charged four motorists with stunt driving/driving at 50km/h over the speed limit, three of those in the area of 26 Highway and Poplar Side Road in Collingwood.

Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP officers laid 211 speeding charges as well as various other Highway Traffic Act and Liquor License Act offences. Officers also patrolled the area waterways with the OPP vessel to ensure that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Canada Day long weekend.
