TIVERTON, ON – Bruce Power's Unit 5 was returned to service Thursday morning after completing a planned maintenance outage.

Unit 5, which had operated for over 500 continuous days before being removed from service for the $86 million maintenance investment program, is one of the top-performing pressurized heavy-water reactors in the world. The final planned outage of 2014 brought 400 temporary workers onto the Bruce Power site.

"Once again, our employees and supplemental workforce have demonstrated their ability to complete highly technical work in a safe and efficient manner," said Brian O'Grady, Senior Vice President, Bruce B. "By completing our outage program on time and budget, Unit 5 is well prepared to provide clean, reliable and carbon-free electricity to the province during the cold winter months."

Bruce Power operators also safely completed a Cobalt-60 harvest from Unit 5, which will be used by Nordion to support gamma sterilization, which is used to sterilize 40 per cent of single-use medical devices.
