urban vs rural
by Liam Kelly

The 2021 Federal Election is over, and the seat changes nationally are almost identical to the 2019 election less than two years ago. Many Canadians are frustrated, many are content, but few are happy with the results.

It’s the second election in a row where the Liberals have lost support and seats in rural parts of Canada. Whether it’s in Eastern or Western Canada, Rural Liberal incumbents and candidates lost support. On the other hand, the Liberals gained seats in the Greater Toronto Area, Vancouver, and Calgary.

This points to an increasing divide between rural and urban Canadians. The Liberal strategy of targeting suburban ridings and maintaining their urban support has for the third election in a row played out well for them.

However, Prime Minister Trudeau said in his victory speech Monday night that he hears Canadians who did not vote for him and that he will not move forward while leaving others behind.

Well Prime Minister Trudeau, I believe that begins by ensuring rural Canadians, their voices and their concerns are not only heard but are an integral part of your governments plans to move Canada forward. When rural and urban Canadians are at the table, Canada will be best positioned to truly move forward as a strong and united nation. Prime Minister Trudeau, the ball is in your court to mend the divisions.
