43 percent, the lowest turnout in voter history. The result: a Conservative majority government with the power given to a man who hardly advertised his platform in the first place.
How can a man be “for the people” when he doesn’t take the time to go out and talk to them? Why should a man less than 1/5th of the eligable voters voted for, have 100% of the power? The opposition is too weak and has little say in decisions going forward.
What exactly is the Conservative party’s platform? Building a 10 billion dollar road would not be necessary if they hadn’t sold the toll-paid 407, which would have been free to drive on by now, to Spanish investors. A road paved right over rich farmland and ecologically beneficial wetlands to save commuters 30 seconds of time.
This counteracts what we should be doing: putting more emphasis on lowering carbon emissions and saving the planet. Doug Ford has no platform to combat global warming which is a huge issue and should be at the forefront of all political platforms at this time. Debt and roads will be inconsequential if we no longer have a livable planet to inhabit.
While I’m grateful for their promise to build 1.5 million homes over the next 10 years they have not proposed a plan for affordable housing. How are students and low-income families supposed to afford such high housing prices? Their plan to raise the minimum wage by $0.50 isn’t going to make a difference for low-income individuals attempting to afford these houses.
Ford plans on building more hospitals yet our problem isn’t a lack of hospitals, it’s not enough healthcare workers. Where is the incentive to hire more full-time staff instead of part-time staff to save money?
As a woman and a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, I am afraid. I am afraid to have a government full of members who are openly anti-abortion and anti-LGBT.
MPPs Sam Oosterhoff, Billy Pang and Todd McCarthy all have openly stated that they don’t think women should have access to abortion. Will Bouma, Paul Calandra, David Piccini and Daisy Wai, Conservative representatives from other regions in Ontario, are also suspected anti-choice and this was merely a quick Google search, not including those whose answers aren’t confirmed.
In the past, the Conservative party has voted against pro-LGBT legislation. In 2019, the party revised the sex-ed curriculum to delay all discussions of 2SLGBTQIA+ topics until Grade 8. There has been a continuous history of anti-LGBT representatives both federally and provincially within the party. When asked to be interviewed about such topics, they denied the motion.
How exactly is the conservative party progressive? How can they call themselves so when they oppose or cease to acknowledge so many of the “new” and “progressive” movements?
Conservative voters are destined to vote conservative and there is no changing that but what happened to the 57% that didn’t even bother going to the polls. Was it a lack of competent leaders? Was it a lack of information or representation? Or have people already given up on fixing the province of Ontario?
