hand and titleThe Owen Sound Artists' Co-op is accepting work for their March Miniature Show. Small works of art and sculpture will be on display and sale in the Legacy Gallery for the full month of March. Intake of this work is on Wednesday, March 1 st , all day, at the Artists' Co-op, 942 2 nd Avenue East. Everyone and anyone are invited to take part, no matter your age or level of skills! Only one restriction applies, the items must be 150 mm (Happy Birthday Canada) or less in any dimension.

Every year the jury considers different candidates and select the person they feel best meets the criteria for recognition. Recent recipients include Georgian Bay Symphony retiring music director John Barnum, and musician and broadcaster Alfie Fromager.

This year's recipient represents a class of individuals in Owen Sound who make their mark not through a high-profile public persona or worldly achievement, but through a life of service to the community which is as humble as it is vital. Fewer-and-Janke-Feb-18-SweetWater-ConcertThe SweetWater Music Festival presents a special winter concert, Up Close & Personal: Mark Fewer and Daniel Janke, Saturday, February 18, 4 p.m. at the Harmony Centre (890 4thAve. East, Owen Sound). This unique music event will feature selections from a new recording by the long-time collaborators, Celestial Blue. Janke composed the works for violin and prepared piano inspired by spiritual music.

The afternoon programme will be focused on these unique pieces. The compositions have strong references to gospel and other folk traditions: music that resonates deeply for both Mark (with his Newfoundland roots) and Daniel (with his Ontario gospel roots). GBSFebOn Saturday February 11 the Georgian Bay Symphony will finish off their concert with one of the most recognizable works of classical music, Ravel's Bolero. Written as a ballet and first performed in Paris in 1928 it was immediately meet with popular success. Over the years it has appeared in many movie scores, most famously in the 1979 movie 10 staring Bo Derek. Sales of recording of the Bolero took a huge jump after that. In 1988 rock legend Frank Zappa had an arrangement made to play during his World Tour. Despite its popularity Ravel himself never really much like the piece.
