One of the most innovative and multi-functional business spaces in our city, the Ginger Press Bookshop and Cafe continues to open its doors to the creative community this spring with these four events.

Book Launch with Cathy Hird 2:00 pm Saturday March 12 One of the standard story lines of Greek mythology is the kidnap of a princess which Cathy explored in her first novel Moon of the Goddess. The sequel, Before the New Moon Rises takes readers on a fast-paced adventure across the mountains and waters of Greece. Cathy Hird will read from her newest self-published book and talk about the research and writing process. Everyone is welcome. Open Mic with Georgian College Students 7:00 pm Thursday March 17 Creative writing students invite you to join them at The Ginger Press for an open mic featuring their writing and music. Everyone is welcome to attend and, if so inclined, share recent work in this relaxed atmosphere.

Proud-to-be Original Canadian, written and self-published by Lori Ross, is an easy-to-read primer that celebrates the culture and heritage of Canada's original peoples: First Nations, Inuit and Metis. Please join us for the launch when Lori will talk about her work. Mohawk Elder and renowned environmentalist Danny Beaton from Six Nations will also give a talk on "Native People: A Culture of Ceremonies" as well as a concert on his traditional flute. Self Publishing 101 with Maryann Thomas
7:00 pm on four Thursday evenings: April 21, 28, May 5, 12
Back by popular demand! This course covers the basics of publishing your own book - everything from the writer to the reader. Topics covered will include editing, design, layout, printing, marketing and distribution. One of the evenings will be spent with a local printer to learn what you need to know about that. The course will focus on words-on-paper books. Registrants are encouraged to have a completed manuscript or a well-developed book concept before the first class, in order to take full advantage of the information presented. Class size will be limited; register early ($150) at 376-4233. Maryann has been publishing books for 30 years; in that time, she has published over 100 titles.
