yin-yang-lion-danceThe launch you attend in your jammies

Owen Sound author Lori Ross is trying something different for her soon-to-be released book.

"YinYang Lion Dance" is a children's picture book based on the cultural traditions of lion dancing. It's a story about courage and friendship and follows the interactions of three lions and a monk through an actual lion dance pattern. The book features twenty full colour photos taken by Sifu W. Robin Young at three different Ontario locations, including Sauble Beach. Sifu Robin also choreographed dancers from his club, Guelph Jing Mo Kung Fu, to act out the scenes.

According to Ross, "I really wanted to host a formal book launch during the two weeks of Chinese New Year celebrations but as all the dancers are busy with performances, and live in various cities, there wasn't an opportunity to get everyone together. I thought a virtual launch would be a fun alternative and it could last the entire two week period from February 16th to March 2nd. The weather is unpredictable this time of year, so with the launch happening on-line, no one has to drive anywhere, or even put on clothes. So far, on the public Facebook launch page is a youtube video we made from the on location photos. Any day now, as soon as the books are ready for pick up from Volumes Publishing in Waterloo - we launch! The book will also be available to purchase directly through our website liondancebook.com"

The star of the book is a seven foot black and white Chinese lion named YinYang. Ross wrote the book after spending almost two years researching the history and customs of lion dancing. "I'm really pleased with this book because it has a great overall message about believing in yourself. I think it's also a fun way for all ages to learn about this iconic art".

YinYang, the lion, will be making an appearance at Heritage Mall for the Grey Bruce Chinese Heritage and Cultural Association's Lantern Fest, 11am to 4 pm, Saturday March 3rd, 2018.
