babies

Dear Editor

Fake news – or is it? You tell me! Let's say that when a baby is born, either in the United States or Canada, that they become responsible for a debt of $50,000. I would guess that in the United States $25,000 of this would be for the military and in Canada $25,000 would be for health care and other social services. If you had a choice of choosing where to be born, which country would you pick? I would think that of all the countries in the world anyone would be willing to pay $50,000 to be born in Canada.

The next thing to think about is where this debt is owed. In the United States a substantial portion is probably owed to China. In Canada it is much more likely to be owed to people like you and me, pension funds and so on. We can argue all night about what the right figures are but surely in our heart of hearts we are happy as hell with the way things are - except for those who want even more but don't want to pay for it.
