rabbit

When the number of rabbits increase, there is also a rise in the wolf population until the rabbit population is brought under control. When the number of rabbits gets back in line the wolves have fewer babies. This is just one example of the balance that is maintained in nature.

Enter humans where there has been a population explosion. The same rules of nature apply to us as well.

Yet every time nature tries to intervene humans manage to do an end run and keep growing. Our whole economic system is based around fighting off the forces of nature that are trying to bring us back in line.

Eventually nature will win or if not win, keep us forever in a losing battle for it. If we are truly intelligent enough we will heed nature's call to at least get our own Canadian population under control. For a start humans in Canada are having fewer children yet we still bring in 300,000 immigrants per year to keep our economy growing. This COVID19 pandemic may just be the opportunity we require to sit back and decide what we really need in life.

In my opinion, a universal basic income is part of the solution. Imagine if UBI was in place before this pandemic started. There would not be as much need to take the drastic financial measures being taken today.

People might say things will get back to normal in a year or so. I hope not or at least hope that it will be a new normal.
