scamsign

Things to look out for, when looking at a potentially suspicious email:

  • Look through the full email address it was sent from. If the address does not line up to who the email says it comes from, it's almost certainly a scam. Any reasonably sized company will have a recognizable email domain (ie. [email protected]).

  • Inconsistencies in the email content – the email is allegedly from Microsoft, about the security of the gmail account; gmail is a product from Google, not Microsoft.
  • Suspicious links – if you hover your mouse over links in the email (don't click!) you should be able to see the address it goes to. If it's not the website of the alleged sender, it's likely a scam.

If you're at all suspicious about an email, look up their contact number through their website and call them to confirm it. Don't use a number in the email. Any company should be happy to confirm for you if an email is theirs.
